Major/Intended Major: Program in the Environment with concentration in Urban Planning
Interesting Fact: I love orcas.
Choose to take Design build because… Throughout my education here at Michigan I have studied big picture processes of urban planning and sustainable land use. To finish our my undergraduate time strongly, I wanted a course for my final semester that really challenged me in a new way and also taught me something new that could be useful in my future field. Not only did the content of the class fascinate me but also the opportunity to apply the content to a very hands on project with a group of people is something I am really excited about.

Choose to take Design build because… “I’ve always been interested in green building but knew that I didn’t want to pursue a degree in it. Taking a class that required no previous knowledge yet offered you such an in-depth and hands on experience was too good to not take. I also attended the Biological station two summers ago and absolutely loved it and was interested in anything that I could do to go back.”

Choose to take Design build because…Honestly, I saw the description and simply had to do it. I’ve been interested in natural building ever since I learned that a house could be off the grid and defy what I once thought were inevitable rules of society. I love breaking those rules in the name of sustainability, and this hands-on experience is just so unique that I couldn’t pass it up!

Interesting Fact: My house at home is also a hotel and I have a boater’s license!
Choose to take Design build because…I’ve always thought of space as a conduit for identity. Since I got to college, I’ve been exploring how different people experience and shape their spaces in accord with their identity. I was SO excited when I saw this class. I’ve known a lot of people who have had formative experiences at the BioStation, and I wanted to experience that for myself by becoming a part of this team. The natural environment is my major and passion, and I’m ready to expand it by try something new with building!

Interesting Fact:I visited four different African countries this past summer. I love seafood and southern food. I’m a Sagittarius (Pisces rising, Taurus Moon) and I will definitely ask about your sign. I love Ranch dressing and I eat meat. A peacock wandered into my yard when I was younger. I am the reigning mashed potato eating contest champion (I beat our classmate Jack in 2015). And I’ll be living in Atlanta this summer.
Choose to take Design build because…I’ve always loved houses and I made tons of elaborately planned forts as a child. I drew floor plans in my spare time when I was in 1st grade. Then when I was 12, I made a hideout in my neighborhood using scraps from construction dumpsters and it was so legitimate that it was taken down because people thought homeless people were living there. I also want to live in tropical Africa at some point in my life and building with natural materials seems like a good skill to have. Oh and the professor! Joe is an extremely influential professor and mentor and any class with him will be a blast (hoping to get patch points for this).
